No Priors Episode 108: Dr. Shiv Rao on the Perfect Clinical Note Artifact

On a recent episode of “No Priors,” a podcast about “the AI revolution,” investors Elad Gil and Sarah Guo sat down with Abridge CEO and Founder Dr. Shiv Rao to discuss the urgent challenges in healthcare and the value that AI is currently delivering to meet those challenges.

The vision is beyond lifting the burden of clinical documentation; it’s to generate the most clinically useful, compliant, and billable notes—in other words, the perfect clinical note artifact. The goal is to relieve clinicians from the anxiety of creating documentation that fulfills these diverse requirements so that they can focus solely on the essential needs of the most important people in healthcare: their patients.

As AI rapidly becomes ubiquitous in clinical settings, this podcast episode is essential listening to understand the past, present, and future of healthcare technology.

The U.S. healthcare system is “facing a public health emergency,” with “two out of five doctors” wanting to opt out of practicing medicine in the next five years, and a quarter of nurses “don’t want to be nurses in the next 12 months,” according to Dr. Rao.

Abridge is acutely aware of these challenges and is designed to be more than “just another tech solution—it’s a lifeline,” said Dr. Rao, who as a practicing cardiologist has firsthand experience with both effects of administrative burden and the relief provided by Abridge.

And he’s not alone. At Corewell Health, the largest health system in Michigan, clinicians who use Abridge experienced an 85% increase in job satisfaction and a 53% decrease in burnout rate. Clinicians at Sutter Health (78%) and KUMC (64%) also experienced marked increases in satisfaction; and clinicians at Riverside Health and Geisinger Health both experienced 55% reductions in burnout.

At the same time, health systems are facing financial pressures, with costs rising and revenues strained, and need to adopt new technologies that deliver real ROI.

With a projected shortage of 100,000 doctors in the U.S. by 2030—and many more nurses over a similar period of time—AI solutions to these pressing issues are needed now more than ever. Watch the full episode (above) to learn much more about how Abridge is increasing clinician wellbeing while delivering financial ROI to health systems.
