The Infusion of Inclusion
The panel discussed the value of diversity in the healthcare field, emphasizing that increasing diversity among healthcare providers leads to better patient outcomes. They noted that people of color and women are critically underrepresented in both provider and leadership roles. However, a more diverse healthcare workforce can enhance patient satisfaction, increase revenue, and quite literally, save lives. To achieve these outcomes, they recognized the importance of promoting cultural humility, building a more diverse pipeline of healthcare professionals, and aiming for more diversity within leadership roles such as on boards of directors. Consideration was also given to the need for public policy that supports their mission. The panelists also showcased current efforts to increase diversity in healthcare, including organizations launching health companies with diverse founders and investing in training and education for underrepresented healthcare professionals. They also highlighted the specific health inequities in maternal care and considered potential solutions. They concluded by calling everyone to play an active role in promoting diversity in healthcare.
