Corewell Health Adopts New AI Technology to Provide Patients With More Focused Clinical Attention

Enterprise-grade ambient AI technology from Abridge reduces administrative burden, giving clinicians more time and energy to do what they do best: care for patients

SAN FRANCISCO, CA, GRAND RAPIDS and SOUTHFIELD, MI, Dec. 5, 2024—Corewell Health™ has chosen Abridge as its enterprise-wide AI platform for clinical documentation to deliver a better patient experience and increase clinician satisfaction. During a 90-day pilot, Corewell Health’s enterprise team partnered with Abridge’s customer teams to implement the technology and saw a significant impact. The technology will be available to 4,000 employed Corewell Health physicians and advanced practice providers across 21 hospitals and 300+ outpatient and post-acute locations.

Abridge works by using AI to automatically transform patient-clinician conversations into structured clinical notes in real-time. Abridge also generates a Patient Visit Summary, delivered at the end of each visit and written at an eighth-grade reading level to ensure patients understand and are fully engaged with their care. With reduced administrative burden, clinicians can focus on patients, rather than paperwork, leading to improved patient satisfaction as well as better care.

“We are proud to be among the first to implement Abridge’s generative AI technology so our patients can get the best care possible from clinicians who are more focused than ever on what matters most: connecting with and caring for patients,” said Corewell Health Chief Digital and Information Officer Jason Joseph. “We are investing in innovative AI capabilities that improve workflow and efficiency and are deploying them across the state to make a significant impact not only on our patient care, but also on our clinicians’ quality of life.”

Key results from Corewell Health clinicians during the 90-day pilot:

  • Increased patient focus: 90% of surveyed clinicians who used the technology reported a significant increase in the undivided attention they could give patients, and a 61% reduction in cognitive load, allowing for more focus and attention to patients.
  • Significant time savings: Surveyed clinicians spent an average of 48% less time on after-hours documentation each week, decreasing from 4.3 hours to 2.2 hours.
  • Clinician satisfaction: Of the surveyed clinicians who used Abridge, 85% reported an increase in satisfaction at work, and more than half reported a decrease in “burnout,” which is primarily caused by administrative burden and leads many clinicians to leave the profession.

“As a practicing physician, I’ve experienced firsthand the emotional and mental tolls of the burden of clinical documentation,” said Kristin Jacob, Corewell Health medical director for physician and APP well-being. “I'm now able to be more present with my patients and practice medicine in a more focused way. The reduction in cognitive load with Abridge has been incredibly freeing and is giving me back precious time with my patients and family."
